Falling demand for cigarettes in 2023 meant a forgettable year for tobacco in Qatar. Government efforts to curb tobacco use and the spreading preference among young adults for e-vapour products, the sale of which remains banned, have put huge pressure on demand for cigarettes.
Smoking prevalence continues to rise in Qatar, although this positive growth trend is only being seen among men, with smoking prevalence among women continuing to decline. Currently, there are approximately 400,000 people living in Qatar who identify as smokers, around 16.
Reducing tobacco use and nicotine dependence remains at the core of the initiatives being undertaken by the government of Qatar under its Vision 2030 programme, which aims to improve the health of the country’s population. Within this context, 2021 saw the Hamad Medical Corporation’s Tobacco Control Center redesignated by WHO as a collaboration centre for the treatment of tobacco dependence, a designation which lasts until August 2025.
The 11 nicotine addiction treatments centres that are established at various health centres under the auspices of the Hamad Medical Corporation’s Tobacco Control Centre recently reported a 300% surge in people visiting such facilities seeking assistance quitting smoking, a trend which is attributed to the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic.
One of the most important background trends developing in Qatar is the decentralisation of the country’s logistics networks as the importance of towns and cities outside of Doha increases. Recent years have seen the government of Qatar actively encourage greater geographic spread in commercial activity by investing substantially in the development of infrastructure across other parts of the country.
