The positive growth dynamic is expected to continue in sports nutrition over the forecast period, with robust volume and constant value growth expected in all major categories. Given that increased health-consciousness is expected to be a lasting legacy of the pandemic, growing participation in sports and fitness activities among the Irish population should continue to boost overall demand.
Protein bars is expected to be one of the key winners in sports nutrition over the forecast period, due to its much broader appeal and larger consumer base. Protein bars, such as the local brand Fulfil, are being consumed as a daily healthy snack, that provides an indulgent taste.
Sports protein RTD is also expected to see good growth over the forecast period as consumers seek more convenient protein offerings that can be consumed on-the-go. Nutramino, Kinetica and For Goodness Shake are the major brands in this category and with their focus on innovation and product development, they are likely to drive category growth in the coming years.

Sports nutrition is targeted at serious athletes and gym-goers, and their principal purpose is to build muscle and to boost energy. Sports Nutrition tracks two types of products: Protein and Non-Protein. Sports protein include bars, powder and ready-to-drink (RTD) offerings. Sports Non-Protein include products that do not have protein as its core ingredient. They can be used to repair muscle or as energy/endurance booster. Note: Mainstream sports nutrition products such as sports drinks (e.g. Gatorade) or energy drinks (e.g. Red Bull) are not included here. Energy and sports drinks are tracked in the Soft Drinks system.
